“I have a very serious injury” Alexander Zverev gives an update after his freaky accident in the French Open
Alexander Zverev's injury at the 2022 French Open
World No. 3 Alexander Zverev‘s dream of winning a Grand Slam will take some more time as the German player was unfortunate to take a nasty fall during his semi-final match of the 2022 French Open against World No. 5 Rafael Nadal. In a lengthy match which had gone past the 3-hour mark, the second set was heading towards a tiebreaker when Zverev fell.
Nadal was serving to force a second-set tiebreaker and on the game point at 40-30, a wide forehand by Rafa was attempted to return by Sascha with a forehand which went wayward after his fall having twisted his ankle and held onto it crying and screaming in pain as the medical team and Nadal rushed to check on the German.
Zverev was taken to the locker room in a wheelchair and after a few checks, it was found that he could not return to the match in any case and he had to forfeit, with the German coming on crutches to convey his forfeit to the chair umpire and Nadal to a great reception from the crowd at the Phillippe-Chatrier.
Alexander Zverev congratulates Rafael Nadal for advancing to the finals
With an unwarranted early wrap to the match, Zverev’s injury made it difficult for him to even attend the press conference. Nadal however defended the tournament over the surface and also expressed his concern for Zverev in the press conference as well as the on-court interview, where he nearly choked up, hoping that the German returns to action healthy and fit. Zverev later posted a video message which was then shared by the official handle of the Roland Garros.
“Very difficult moment for me today on the court. Obviously, fantastic match until what happened, happened. Looks like I have a very serious injury but the medical team and the doctors are still checking on it and we’ll keep you updated and let you know as soon as we know more. I want to congratulate Rafa obviously, it’s an incredible achievement, the 14th final, hopefully, he can go all the way and make some more history. But not an easy moment for me today and I’ll keep everybody updated. See you,” said Zverev.
Nadal will now take on Casper Ruud in the finals of men’s singles after the Norwegian defeated Marin Cilic in the second semi-final of the day denying the Croatian a chance to become just the fifth active player to reach the finals of all four Grand Slams.
