“I have improved as a player!” Emma Raducanu feels optimistic over her chances at the US Open after bowing out of Cincinnati

Emma Raducanu, the 19-year-old British professional has had the world at her feet for most of last year and throughout this season as well. Emma Raducanu stunned the tennis world after he won the US Open last year after beating Leylah Fernandez in the finals of the event, winning the US Open while just being an 18-year-old heaped a lot of pressure on young Raducanu.

Raducanu has been unable to build on her performances ever since her US Open triumph, she has bowed out early from every major tournament she has played this season. She won the first two games at the Cincinnati Open most recently but that dream was cut short after she was eliminated in the round of 16.

Emma Raducanu talks about her US Open chances

Emma Raducanu started off her Cincinnati Open campaign with a win against Serena Williams, she then went on to beat another Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka in the second round, the young Brit could not follow her performances in the round of 16 though as Jessica Peluga got the better of in straight sets.

Talking about the US Open victory last year, in her post-match conference, Raducanu said, “I think that at the US Open I played really good tennis. I was swinging with the freedom that I started to tap into this week. And I did really enjoy this week, like if I made an error, it was almost like a positive thing, like, ‘Good, you are going for it.’ It paid off a lot more than it didn’t.“

“But I also think, honestly, that my opponents have been playing a lot better this year. I’m re-watching my matches from the US Open and there are certain moments where I was given a lot of gifts or maybe they got a bit tight or something like that. So I think I have improved actually as a player. As I’m finding this sort of freedom in my swinging, I think that I achieved something great, of course, but I was playing completely free and I’m starting to do that again.“

Raducanu will be gearing up to defend her US Open title as the final major of the season is right around the corner, the 19-year-old has everybody’s eyes on her as the defending champion prepares.
