“I have known him for ages,” Dominic Thiem ready to face former mentor Gunter Bresnik on the opposite box
Gunter Bresnik and Dominic Thiem
28-year-old Dominic Thiem was sidelined for the majority of last year due to a wrist injury. He just made a comeback and won his first ATP-level match in 14 months at the Swedish Open. With three straight victories over Hugo Gaston in the round of 32, Federico Delbonis in the round of 16, and Juan Pablo Varillas yesterday, Thiem has continued his strong form at the Swiss Open. He lost to a determined Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals, his first ATP-level semi-final appearance of the season.
Thiem, the winner of the 2020 U.S. Open, had been coached by Gunter Bresnik from age eight to 2019, but he has known Bresnik since he was three–after Thiem’s father, Wolfgang, came to work as a coach at Bresnik’s international tennis academy in Vienna in 1997.
Dominic Thiem’s former coach sides with opponent
Thiem will compete against Alexander Shevchenko, who slipped into the 28s grid as Lucky Loser. This is exciting in that Shevchenko is trained by Günter Bresnik, Thiem’s long-time coach. It can be assumed that Thiem is very familiar with the 21-year-old Russian, who has lived in Austria for many years.
“I have known him for ages, he played very well when he was twelve years old. It was predictable for Sascha to go to the ATP circuit.” This is how Dominic Thiem describes the young Russian Alexander Shevchenko, in a press conference. It will be a heavy match for both the players with Thiem being sued by Bresnik as it is and Shevchenko will face the pressure, not only from himself but also from Bresnik.
