3-time grand slam champion Andy Murray defeated his old nemesis Stan Wawrinka in a thrilling opening round match at the 2022 Cincinnati Masters in three sets 7-6(3),5-7,7-5. Murray, who has had a few poor outings in the recent weeks, will definitely get a big boost in his confidence after beating Wawrinka.
The match-up was projected to be the highlight of the first round at Cincinnati given the stature of the two giants. Both Murray and Wawrinka were amongst the best players in the world a few years ago but due to injury concerns, are nowhere near to their prime right now. The battle of two multiple major champions delivered as promised with the two leaving everything out in court.
Murray eventually won the match and was visibly emotional after putting everything on the line physically to win the match. In the on-court interview, Murray spoke about both his and Wawrinka’s age and their fighting spirit and hoped that the crowd still enjoyed watching them play.
“We’re not young anymore. Matches like this are a lot tougher than they were when we were in our mid-twenties. But both of us gave our best right until the end. Both of us love the sport, we’ve had our issues with injuries the last few years and I hope you guys still enjoy watching us play,” Murray said.
‘It’s taken a lot of effort, a lot of struggles to get back but I want to make the most of it while I’m still able to’: Andy Murray
Murray further reminisced how he started playing tennis at the age of 4 and revealed the motivation behind him playing at the highest level despite so many injury struggles. He got emotional and said that it is the love that he has for the sport which is still motivating him.
“The sport has been a huge part of my life since I started playing when I was four but probably started to take it seriously once I was 12,13 so it’s been a huge part of my adult life, you know the last twenty years. When I was out injured, I didn’t know whether I was going to be able to come back, and you remember the reasons why you play the game. I started playing as a kid because… I love it. It’s taken a lot of effort, a lot of struggles to get back, to play at this level again but I want to make the most of it while I’m still able to,” he said.
In the second round at Cincinnati, Murray will take on fellow Brit Cameron Norrie. The No.1 Brit will have an added advantage but Murray will use all his experience to find a way past an in-form Norrie.
