“I just took advantage,” Stefanos Tsitsipas sarcastically thanks Daniil Medvedev’s missed shots after defeating the Russian to reach the finals in Cincinnati
Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas
World No. 7 and the 4th seed at the ongoing 2022 Cincinnati Masters, Stefanos Tsitsipas registered his second win over a World No. 1 player after he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals to enter his maiden finals of the tournament. Stef won the match 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 23 minutes to win his 3rd match against the Russian who continues to lead the head-to-head 7-3.
Stef will be looking for his 3rd career ATP-1000 title and his second of the season after he made a successful title defence in the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters. Tsitsipas has been highly inconsistent since the Clay season finished and despite him winning a title during the Grass season, the performances were dicey as he lost his first match in the Montreal Masters and has now entered the finals in Cincinnati just a week later.
“I knew I had to sign up for a difficult task,”: Stefanos Tsitsipas
While he ended up on the losing side, Medvedev did not make it easy for Stef to claim the victory and the match remained quite balanced until the final set. The match also had some heated moments with Stef hitting the ball directly at Medvedev’s body when the top seed approached the net but eventually, it was the Greek’s night as he survives another day to have a shot at the title.
“There were some difficult shots I had to play a bit more. A few short balls I really took advantage of and came in. A lot of courageous serve and volleys, approaches to the net that definitely gave me that great win today. I knew I had to sign up for a difficult task, third set, it wasn’t going to be easy. He made it very physical and really demanding for me. I just took advantage of some of his missed first serves. I think I had a couple of opportunities where it seemed to be going towards my side.
“He kept missing a lot of first serves consecutively and that gave me some time to think of my next move a little bit clearer. He gave me a double fault on break point, which I think was very important moment for me psychologically to give my best shot. I was a few games away and I was very calm and concentrated in every single task that was given to me,” said Tsitsipas speaking on the court after his win.
Tsitsipas will now take on rejuvenated Borna Coric who defeated Cameron Norrie in the semi-finals to enter his second career Masters finals. The Croatian had defeated Rafael Nadal in the second round and has just gone from strength to strength since then and is confirmed to break into the Top-50, a jump of more than 100 places having entered the main-draw through protected ranking.
