Novak Djokovic becomes the second man to win 21 Grand Slam titles as he defeated Nick Kyrgios in the finals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships to win his 4th consecutive title at the All-England Club. Djokovic won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) in 3 hours and 1 minute to win his 7th Wimbledon title matching Pete Sampras’ tally as the second-most Wimbledon titles in the Open Era.
The win in the finals was Novak’s 28th consecutive win in the Grand Slam and his 38th consecutive win on the Center Court, not having lost a match on the historic venue since 2013, a streak extending to 9 years. Djokovic is now one Wimbledon title from matching Roger Federer‘s record 8 Wimbledon wins and one Grand Slam away from matching Rafael Nadal‘s record of 22 major titles as he is now the second-most decorated men’s Grand Slam champion.
“I will hopefully wait for some good news from the USA”: Novak Djokovic
After all the difficulties of the season, the win in Wimbledon was a big boost for Djokovic. The episode in Australia saw him miss nearly two months of action halting him when he was probably in one of his most dominant forms. A tough draw in the 2022 French Open also didn’t help and with a big chance of not being allowed to play the 2022 US Open, the Wimbledon was very important for Novak and the Serbian was certainly happy with the performances he put over the fortnight.
“I am over the moon with joy and happiness. I was not feeling well in the first few months of the year, generally. Mentally and emotionally. I realized that I have to be patient. Wimbledon trophies came for me in some crucial moments in my life and career, like in 2018 after my elbow surgery. I felt support and love from the crowd today, I am grateful for that. Australian Open is probably the place where I feel most comfortable, but Wimbledon is getting closer.
“It is so difficult to read his serve, both first and second. He is putting additional pressure. It was frustrating at times seeing balls just fly by me. But I was solid from the back of the court. Serve was there at times, 2nd serve could’ve been better. It was a huge momentum shift (break in the 3rd). I felt that he was not moving as well in the fourth as he did until then. In the tie break, I managed to read his serve, and made him play an extra shot. I knew that composure was one of the key elements.
“I want to keep my body healthy and keep myself motivated to compete with the young guys. I am on vacation for the next couple of weeks. And then, I will hopefully wait for some good news from the USA. I would love to play. If that doesn’t happen, I will have to think about my schedule,” said Djokovic during the Champion’s press conference at Wimbledon.
