Emma Raducanu reveals the real reason for supporting Tottenham in Premier League

Emma Raducanu

Emma Raducanu is probably one of the most hyped-up player on the WTA tour. She become an overnight sensation last year after winning the US Open. She was the first-ever tennis player in history to win a grand slam as a qualifier when she defeated Leylah Fernandez in the Final.

Ever since that, Raducanu has been projected as the big thing both by British Media and her fans. But she hasn’t lived up to the hype yet. She followed her US Open triumph with a string of initial round exits to end the season. The start of the 2022 season hasn’t been ideal for her either. She bowed out of the second round of the Australian Open and once again, didn’t manage to clear the early rounds of tournaments she played.

She made her professional clay-court debut last week at the Billie Jean King Cup where she won her opening match but lost her second match where she didn’t hold serve even once.

The Brit is currently at Stuttgart practicing for the upcoming tournament. She was seen practicing in Tottenham’s outfit which meant that she’s a big time Spurs fan. Ahead of the tournament, she spoke about why she chose Spurs and revealed that almost everyone on her team is a Spurs fan so she was naturally inclined to the club. She also said that she saw England’s captain Harry Kane last year at Euros and was impressed by him.

“I loved following the Euros last year, watching Harry Kane the England captain, and Son [Heung-min], I’m a bit fan of his as well,” she said. “So, I like to dabble,” she said.

“My whole team basically are big Spurs fans,” she said. “I feel like they’re egging me on and desperately trying to get me behind. I don’t necessarily follow football so much but I feel now, because of them, some sort of connection.”

Talking about playing on clay, Raducanu spoke about the physical demands of the surface. She said that she will grow to be a better player on clay.

“You need to build the shot and that takes a lot more energy and physical demand. You have to be more crafty. I think it’s a good lesson for someone younger like me to develop more skills. I’m looking forward to spending more time on clay as the years go by. It’s going to be a good surface for me when I’m older,” she said.

Raducanu will face Australian Storm Sanders in the first round of the Stuttgart Open on Wednesday.
