“I looked at it and said F**k,” Stefanos Tsitsipas’ agent spills the beans on Apostolos being caught cheating on camera

Stefanos Tsitsipas' coach and father Apostolos was caught on camera speaking on phone while Stef took a bathroom break

Former World No. 3 and currently ranked 7th in the world, Stefanos Tsitsipas has been dubbed as one of the future flagbearers of tennis given the vast potential that he has shown numerous times. Just 24 years old at the moment, he has won titles across all surfaces and has 9 ATP titles in his trophy cabinet including two ATP-1000 titles and 1 Year-End Championship trophy as well.

With a runner-up finish at the 2021 French Open where he was 2-sets up in the finals but could not win the final set before Novak Djokovic made a superb comeback to deny the Greek his maiden Grand Slam title, Stef is slowly becoming one of the biggest players on Clay with both of his Masters title coming in Monte-Carlo in a brilliant title defence this year, the only player on the ATP Tour to make a successful title defense in a Masters tournament till now.

While Stef has been proving his prowess on the court, he is often in the middle of controversies. One of the biggest issues that he has faced has been off-court coaching by his father Apostolos Tsitsipas who is also his coach. Stef on numerous occasions has clarified that his father is just cheering him on and he has requested him to not say anything, his father does not listen and Stef is ready to bear the consequences.

During the 2021 Cincinnati Masters, Stef was up against Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals and although the German would go on to win the title later, their semi-final clash was very heated as Zverev accused Stef of taking an untimely bathroom break to break the match’s momentum and then went on to accuse Stef’s father of sending him instructions through phone after Tsitsipas Sr. was caught on camera using his phone further adding fuel to the fire.

“I looked at that shot too and said f**k. The father was talking to the mother and Stef didn’t bring his cell phone. What people don’t know is that he himself wrote a letter to the ATP board to ask them to clarify the bathroom rule, because he felt responsible. So that the players, the television, sponsors, the public, could understand what the rule said, which was very open. Luckily it was corrected,” said Stef’s agent Patricio Apey speaking with Claytenis.

With recurring offences of extended bathroom break and off-court coaching, the ATP eventually had to make clear rules and guidelines on the limit of bathroom breaks that can be taken by any player and have allowed off-court coaching under some conditions on trial basis for the second half of the 2022 season starting after the 2022 Wimbledon Championships were concluded.
