“I no longer care about it” Mats Wilander opines on the GOAT debate between the Big-3
Mats Wilander, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer
Who is the GOAT in tennis? There will never be a reasonable answer to this question in tennis as to who the greatest tennis player of all time is because the fans of each will say that their player is better than the remaining two. Novak Djokovic’s latest win at Wimbledon has again sparked the debate between journalists, experts and tennis fans. It would have been much easier to say if only one of those three achieved far more titles than anyone in the game.
Novak Djokovic has now won 21 majors in his career which put him only one short of Rafael Nadal and also takes him one ahead of Roger Federer in the total no. of grand slams. But again, the GOAT can’t be considered only from the no. of slams one has won also it would be unfair to say that it should be decided on most no. of career titles they have won.
Mats Wilander says he doesn’t care who will end up with most grand slam titles
The latest to comment on the GOAT discussion is Mats Wilander, who is a Swedish former world No. 1 tennis player. he won seven Grand Slam singles titles (three at the French Open, three at the Australian Open, and one at the US Open), and one Grand Slam men’s doubles title (at Wimbledon). His breakthrough came suddenly and unexpectedly when he won the 1982 French Open at the age of 17.
The former Swedish player said he prefers different criteria for the debate and how all three were dominant throughout their career at different phases. “The real question now is whether Novak is allowed to go and play the US Open due to his vaccination status, which is very important. Does it really have to matter in the end, who wins the GOAT title race? Who is the greatest of all time? I no longer think. All three had their three or four years where they dominated.
“Now, there are back and forth with Rafa and Novak and we have the privilege of witnessing it. For me, personally, I no longer care who will end up with the most Grand Slam titles. A few years ago I would have said that the numbers were very important, but it seems that in recent years we have to start talking about the dynamics in their careers,” said Wilander.
