Nick Kyrgios has had breakthrough performances in the year as he reached the Grand Slam singles final for the first time at Wimbledon. Though he lost the Wimbledon finals, he attained success and registered his name among the elites. He reflects on his performances throughout the year and considers his campaign at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship as the turning point.
After his spectacular performance in Wimbledon followed by his triumph at Citi Open and a fourth-round exit at the US Open, he had an abrupt ending to his season. He had withdrawn from the Paris Masters due to a recurring knee injury that forced him to withdraw from the quarter-finals of the 2022 Japan Open mid-way through the tournament. He had also withdrawn from the Swiss Indoors in order to get adequate rest.
Nick Kyrgios talked about his struggles and needed some kind of validation as he felt like losing his identity. He even admitted that his campaign at Wimbledon was a life-enriching performance for him. He claimed that it instilled self-belief and even made him hungry for success.
During an interview, the Aussie said that “In recent years it seemed to me that I had lost my identity on the tennis court, so I proved that I am still one of the best in the world. Before the final at Wimbledon I couldn’t sleep, it was what I had worked for all my life. I was two sets away from tennis immortality, it’s an experience I will never forget. It made me so much hungrier for success, I learned a lot.“

Nick Kyrgios excited to be part of the exhibition matches in Saudi Arabia
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist is one of the twelve players scheduled to take part in the Diriyah Tennis Cup in Saudi Arabia despite the tournament receiving criticism. He was excited to be part of the tournament as Kyrgios admits that he looks forward to building a rapport with the people and popularizing the sport in such countries where tennis players are fewer. He desires to leave behind a legacy and attract new tennis fans.
“I’m always excited about the idea of playing this type of event because it’s very important that the fans can be involved. I love traveling to places where you don’t know much about tennis and trying to draw attention to the sport, I think it’s important. When I retire I want to know that I have left something and gotten many new fans into the sport. I think it’s a bonus for me to be able to play these matches and I will use the pressure from the match to start ahead of the others at the start of the season,” said Nick Kyrgios.
He aims to use this opportunity to prepare himself for the upcoming season and make a strong start to his 2023 campaign. Despite achieving success, his outbursts of anger and failed attempts to control his emotions prove to be a major concern for him for which he has been often punished and even penalized. His outbursts at the Wimbledon finals towards a lady spectator need no introduction. He even donated some amount of money in charity to settle the legal case with the lady spectator.
