20-time grand slam champion Roger Federer took to social media a couple of days back to announce his retirement from tennis. Federer affirmed he will retire from professional tennis after the upcoming Laver Cup. Earlier, Federer was supposed to play the Swiss Indoors in Basel too but he did otherwise.

Federer decided to undergo third knee surgery after Wimbledon last year and hence was ruled out for a year. He was supposed to return around Wimbledon this year but his recovery didn’t go according to plan. He still wasn’t ready to compete at the highest level and given he is 41, decided to take the tough call.

British tennis legend Tim Henman spoke about Federer’s retirement recently to Eurosport and called him irreplaceable. He hailed the impact he has had on the sport and also called him one of the most influential people in tennis.

“On the court, you know, as a competitor, I think he’s irreplaceable. The impact across the sport of tennis and global sport has been absolutely massive. The most incredible career, and one of the most influential people in our sport,” Henman said.

Tim Henman talks about Roger Federer’s legacy at Wimbledon

Federer is regarded as the greatest grass-court player of all time. He first won the Junior Wimbledon title in 1998 and then made his mark on the All England grass when he stunned Pete Sampras in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2001. A couple of years later, he won his first Wimbledon title and over the years became the most successful player in Wimbledon history with 8 titles.

Henman said that Federer’s legacy at Wimbledon is unmatched and ‘absolutely incredible’. “I think his legacy at the All-England club is absolutely incredible,” he said.
