Serena Williams eased through her first round of the US Open against Danka Kovinic on Tuesday. From her outfit to her aces, she carries game and always means business when it comes to her home tournament. This year is particularly special. Every match that she plays could potentially be her last which is why fans are rushing to see the champion for the last time.
In addition to this, Serena Williams will also be playing the women’s double tournament with her sister, Venus Williams. Just this month, Serena Williams rocked the tennis world after announcing her retirement from tennis. In her personal essay for Vogue, she said, “It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine. I don’t want it to be over, but at the same time I’m ready for what’s next.” Since the announcement, Williams’ era-defining tennis career has been praised by her peers and experts. Although, John McEnroe made some controversial remarks about her former coach, Rick Macci.

Recently, John McEnroe mistook Williams’ former coach Rick Macci for Paul Cohen. McEnroe claimed that Rick Macci refused to coach Serena Williams when she was just starting out in tennis but his assertions were proven wrong when Macci tweeted McEnroe’s mistake. According to the biographical drama, “King Richard”, it was in fact, Paul Cohen who did not coach both the sisters. Cohen only provided coaching to Venus Williams.
Rick Macci is a prominent coach in the tennis world. He has taken players like Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova under his wing. Macci has been training the Williams sisters from the very beginning.
When Serena Williams announced her retirement, Macci said, “It doesn’t surprise me. Listen, she’s doing this on her terms. She has a lot of things going on. I’m just happy for her because she’s making the decision and she’s doing it on her terms. What I really like it’s gonna end at the U.S. Open. That’s where she won her first Grand Slam and people in New York love it. I think it’s gonna be a must-see TV and knowing Serena, she’s gonna go out with a bang.”
Serena Williams is looking to win a record 7th title at the US Open and a 24th grand slam title.
