“I want to really deserve that spot”- Ons Jabeur sets her sights on Iga Swiatek’s No. 1 spot after solid Wimbledon opener
Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur
Ons Jabeur has had a standout 2022 season thus far. At the Madrid Open, she won her first WTA 1000 championship, making history as the first African and Arab player to do so. She also won the Berlin Open a week ago to kick off her season on grass courts.
She achieved a career-high No. 2 ranking on Monday morning as a result of her heroics, and a few hours later she began her Wimbledon campaign by defeating Swedish opponent Mirjam Bjorklund 6-1, 6-3 in just 54 minutes. Jabeur’s performance was typical of her style; she used drop shots to liven things up and broke three times in the first set and once in the second.
“I want to have the level to be No.1”- Ons Jabeur
In her post-match press conference, Ons Jabeur stated that she aspires to play at the same pace as current No. 1 player Iga Swiatek and to have the level to be the No.1 player in the world. “The most important thing, I want to have the level to be No.1. I don’t just wanna be No.1 like that, put a lot of pressure on myself. Everybody is looking forward to win against No.1. I want to really deserve that spot. Hopefully, I can be the level that Iga is playing right now,” she said.
Later, the recently ranked World No. 2 continued by saying that she thinks everyone can succeed in anything if they have a strong mentality. She mentioned that she comes from a third-world country and that despite people’s doubts about her, she has accomplished a lot. “If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything. That’s honestly the message I’m trying to send every time. I’m someone from Tunisia, nobody even believed that I could be here, and here I am talking to you,” Ons Jabeur added.
