Emma Raducanu made her professional clay court debut at the Billie Jean King Cup where she represented Great Britain in their qualifiers against the Czech Republic. The British youngster won her first game against Tereza Martincova. However, her happiness was short-lived as Raducanu lost to former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova 6-1, 6-1 as she struggled with foot blisters.

The former US Open champion’s movement was majorly hampered as she struggled to move through the court and was in a lot of pain. She also highlighted how the problems with the blisters got even worse as the match went on. Eventually, she lost the match and Great Britain also lost the tie as the Czechs booked the ticket for the finals later this year.

The youngster revealed how her physio would wash her foot with surgical spirit and it was very painful for the 19-year-old as she screamed through the process. The process was repeated throughout the last week making sure she is ready for the WTA Stuttgart Open. “My physio Will is bathing my feet in surgical spirit every day – it’s definitely painful,” Raducanu told the media. “We did it after the match [at the Billie Jean King Cup]. I was literally screaming but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do and try and get ready for Stuttgart.”

Emma Raducanu agreed that she is getting frustrated with persistent injury problems which has had direct repercussions to her progress and game play. But the youngster is satisfied knowing that injuries have hampered her growth and development and not her tennis. She feels her tennis is at a good level.

“Of course it’s frustrating [to be hampered by numerous injuries] for sure,” Raducanu said. “But in some sort of twisted way it gives me a sense of confidence and relief that I don’t think it’s my tennis that’s the issue.”

“I think my tennis level is pretty good,” she continued. “It’s just about being able to repeat it or maintain it or not be hampered by any kind of physical issues and as soon as I sort all these out and keep building on my tennis level, then I think I will be able to put out good matches back to back.”

After a mixed bag outing at the Billie Jean King Cup, Emma Raducanu will feature at the WTA Stuttgart Open that is scheduled to take place at the indoor clay court in the Porsche tennis centre. Raducanu who is the eighth seed in the event will start her campaign against Australian qualifier Storm Sanders in the first round in Stuttgart.
