“I was playing well, It hurts to make such a decision” Rafael Nadal addresses the media on his decision to withdraw from Wimbledon after reaching Spain

Rafael Nadal had to take the decision to withdraw himself from the Wimbledon Championship 2022 due to an abdominal tear of 7mm he encountered during his quarter-final match against Taylor Fritz. Nadal was aiming to win a Calendar Grand Slam, the second person who would have achieved it after Rod Laver. Nadal looked in great discomfort during the course of the match and had to take a medical time-out after losing the first set in that match.

Nadal returned to the Wimbledon Championships after a gap of three years and was in great form this year. He was one of the favorites to win this year’s Men’s singles title. However, due to this abdominal tear, he had to opt out of the semi-final match against Nick Kyrgios, even though he had gone for a light practice session, prior to the match day. Later on the day, he made the announcement to withdraw from the tournament.

After reaching Spain, Rafael Nadal admitted that he had no choice but to accept things as they come. He said that “You know what’s up, but you always want to play and try to the end. I am a fairly calm person and I try to analyze things with perspective, looking for the logical and rational part.

He also said, “What hurts is that I couldn’t compete in a privileged situation because I was playing well and in the semi-finals of a tournament as important as Wimbledon. In the end, there is nothing left but to look forward and have a positive attitude.

This is not the first time Nadal has to make the decision to withdraw from a Grand Slam due to his injuries. In the year 2012 at the Australian Open, he withdrew himself owing to his right-knee injury in the quarterfinal match against Andy Murray.
