Fernando Gonzalez wanted Novak Djokovic to win the Calendar Grand Slam

Recently, the 41-years old Chilean said some nice words about Novak Djokovic and how he cheered for the Serb to win Calendar Grand Slam in 2021. In a lengthy interview with ‘CLAY’, former ATP number 5 Gonzalez said nice words for Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic came very close to making the ‘Calendar Grand Slam’ last year, we all cheered for him. It would have been a formidable undertaking,” said Gonzalez.

“The pressure was enormous, and it gave him the bill in the US Open final. I was very sorry for him, because I was hoping to see someone accomplish such a feat ”- added Fernando, who now retired ten years ago.”

Novak’s calendar grand slam dream died when he lost last year in the US Open, he reached the US Open with only one dream, the dream of having ‘Calendar Grand Slam’ honour to his name which has not been achieved by any player since 1969 and the last one to do so was the legend, Rod Laver. Djokovic’s dream was ended by the Russian Daniil Medvedev who defeated the Serb in three straight sets. Djokovic also missed out on a fourth US Open title and 21st career Grand Slam, leaving him stuck on the men’s record 20 Slam trophies with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer
