World No. 46 Qinwen Zheng made a name for herself at the 2022 French Open when she defeated former Roland Garros champion Simona Halep in the second round and became the only player to win a set against Iga Swiatek during the World No. 1’s title run at the Grand Slam. As a result of her run in the major, she entered the Top-50 for the first time.

Zheng recently won the WTA-125 title in Valencia, played on clay courts, her first WTA-organised title having earlier won 8 ITF titles from 8 finals, having a 100% winning record. The 19-year-old is slowly grabbing the attention of the tennis world towards her and having picked up some good wins this season, some good runs over the course of the remainder of the season are expected.

Zheng was recently asked about her idols growing up and the Chinese player was quick to answer the question, naming Roger Federer as her idol. But she did add that she watched matches and followed many other players as well to learn everything possible from the best in business.

“My idol was Roger Federer, I always say he is great. As a child, I often watched his matches on TV. I watch a lot of footage of Djokovic and of course Nadal, Federer and other top players,” said Zheng as reported by BTU.

“Everyone says that I play very aggressively, but sometimes I lack patience. So on the court, I try to be more patient in important moments. In such moments, you need to follow the opponent and try to impose a game on her. In tennis, the match is not won by the stronger one, but by the one who is better able to cope with the tension and makes the best choice during the match.

“When I go out on the court, I don’t think that this is maybe the World No.1 or that she has won Slams before. She has only one racket in her hands, she is your rival and a living person. So everything is possible. I don’t want to lose matches easily, but I want to show my opponent that it’s not easy to beat me,” said Zheng speaking about her mentality on the court.
