Rafael Nadal admits he might hand a ‘walkover’ to Nick Kyrgios before the Wimbledon semi-final

Rafael Nadal's injury at 2022 Wimbledon

World No. 4 Rafael Nadal put in a massive shift to emerge victorious in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships against Taylor Fritz to enter his 8th semi-final at the All-England Club and his 38th career Grand Slam final. Nadal won the match 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) after a long battle of 4 hours and 20 minutes.

Nadal however did not have a good ride during the match as he found himself injured after the first set and had to take medical assistance in the locker room with his father and sister asking him to forfeit the match and not push his body too much. Nadal however continued to play despite the difficulties in his abdomen and went on to win the match to go 19-0 in Grand Slam events this year.

With the win over Fritz, Nadal will now take on Nick Kyrgios in the semi-finals with the Australian reaching his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final after a straight-set win over Cristian Garin in his quarter-final clash. With Kyrgios in brilliant form having reached the semi-finals of the two Grass court events he played prior to Wimbledon, the match between him and Rafa will be an epic clash, provided the match is played.

Speaking in the press conference after the win, Nadal admitted that he is unsure whether he will be playing in the semi-finals and only after undergoing scans and taking advice from his medical team, he will make the decision. “Honestly, I can’t give you a clear answer because if I gave you a clear answer and tomorrow another thing happens, I will be a liar. I just wanted to give myself a chance. Not easy to leave the tournament, not easy to leave Wimbledon, even if the pain was hard,” said Nadal in comments reported by Reuters.
