Ben Shelton, the young American player has some remarkable performances to his name after he made his place in the third round at the Cincinnati Open but lost to Cameron Norrie in straight sets not without giving a tough fight. He had defeated Casper Ruud in the second round and Lorenzo Sonego in the first round to take his place in the third round. He has a 14-5 record on the ATP Challenger Tour this year reaching the finals of the Challenger events in Rome and Chicago.

He made his debut in the ATP events at Atlanta as a wild-card entrant but could only make his way until the second round where he gave his best but lost to his compatriot John Isner in an exciting three-set match. After his remarkable stint at Cincinnati, he reached his career-best ranking of No 171. He also has a career-high ATP doubles ranking of No. 416. Shelton used to play for Florida Gators and his father Bryan Shelton happened to be his coach.

Shelton has a record of 37-5 in single matches during his college freshman years at the University of Florida and even went on to win the NCAA Singles Championship in 2022. He was named the 2022 ITA National Player of the Year and the 2022 SEC Player of the Year. The young left-handed American received a wild-card entry into the main draw of the US Open which starts on 29 August and it also marks his debut in the main draw. Shelton was excited and thrilled to play his first Grand Slam event after he turns pro.

On his social media account on Twitter, the 19-year-old Shelton expressed his emotions about starting a new chapter. He said “After sitting down with my parents this weekend, I have decided to forgo my last two years of eligibility and turn pro. While this wasn’t an easy decision, I’m excited for the next chapter in my career. I would also like to thank my family, who have always taught me to BELIEVE in God, and myself, while pushing me to stay balanced in everything I do. God is good.

He extended his gratitude to everyone who was with him in his sophomore year as it would not have been possible without their support. He further added “I want to thank the University of Florida for two incredible years. It has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience to become part of the Florida Family, and to compete in National Championships. These are memories I’ll cherish forever. I have made brothers for life. I’m grateful for my teammates, coaches, and support staff at the University of Florida who have been there for me my whole collegiate career, and helped shape me into the person I am today.
