“I worked on letting of being perfect” Emma Raducanu brings out her true self and her love for motorsports in the latest Nike advertisement
Emma Raducanu
World No. 11 Emma Raducanu is about to complete her first year on the Tour as she came to the limelight during her run at the 2021 Wimbledon when she made it to the 4th round becoming the youngest British woman to reach the Round of 16 while she was ranked outside the Top-300. She had to retire mid-match in the 4th round match because of breathing difficulties but she had already announced herself to the tennis world.
The run during Wimbledon was followed by her victory in the 2021 US Open where she was ranked 150th in the world and entered the main-draw as a qualifier and went on to become the first qualifier to win a singles major in the Open Era while breaking many other records, most importantly, ending Britain’s wait of 54 years for a woman singles Grand Slam champion. She also achieved the record of having played the fewest Grand Slams before claiming her first major title. But things haven’t really gone her way since then.
“Perfection just doesn’t exist”: Emma Raducanu
Ever since winning the US Open, Emma has reached the quarter-finals only once and has not yet registered three consecutive wins. While this is her first full season on the Tour, her fitness has also been a major factor that has affected her performance with constant injuries. This coupled with her constant chopping and changing of head coaches has also contributed in some way toward not being consistent enough.
“I walked away from Wimbledon. I never experienced anything like it, I just let all the emotions go like crazy. I took that straight into training and then the US Open happened. After winning the US Open, everyone just expected me to win every single tournament I was ever going to play again. I think it’s a bit unrealistic because perfection just doesn’t exist. I worked on letting go and letting go of being perfect at all times and being afraid to look bad in front of myself,” says Emma in the ad.
Emma further drives in the streets of her hometown and talks about how she disconnects from tennis once she leaves the club having earlier visited her first tennis court as well. An avid motorsports lover, Emma then visited the Motocross Track in Canada Heights to talk about her love for racing.
“From a young age, I did motocross and karting and I could do something that not many 9-years old girls at the time could do. I was so shy and scared and then I think that despite all that I was able to come here and go to the woods and go onto the motocross bikes. I just really like the thrill, I kind of chased that. I think regardless of the sport, you have to react and adapt, also just be on your toes and take risks. I want to connect the Emma I am and the Emma I want to be. When I do that, I feel like I’m gonna be pretty dangerous,” says Emma further in the advertisement.
