“If I had won Wimbledon, I would’ve struggled to find the motivation,” Nick Kyrgios considers his stint in Wimbledon as the biggest learning lesson of his life
Nick Kyrgios
Nick Kyrgios, the Wimbledon finalist, will return to action at the ATP250 Masters event in Atlanta, where he had won previously in the year 2016. This will be his first appearance after the Wimbledon final defeat. He had reached his first ever singles finals at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship but faced defeat to Novak Djokovic who won his 7th Wimbledon title and 4th title in a row. Kyrgios played fantastically on his debut but the experience of the Serbian overshadowed him at crucial points in the game.
During this year at Wimbledon, he had serious issues in the quarter-final match against Stefanos Tsitsipas when he behaved like a bully trying to distract his opponent. Similarly, during the finals, he insisted the chair umpire oust a lady from the audience stating that she is distracting him. This distracted him to the point that he started producing unforced errors and lost the match eventually.
Kyrgios’s main issue other than his playing has been his outburst of emotions during the course of the play. Bashing of racquets, verbal spats with the umpire or the linesman, and even the audience when a certain point does not go as he wants. This sort of behavior even lands him in trouble and getting fined or facing suspension from the tour but it is something he needs to take care of in the future.

“I’m full of confidence, thanks to everything that happened” Nick Kyrgios considers his loss at Wimbledon as an important lesson learned
Kyrgios, recently in an interview, spoke about how things have changed completely after Wimbledon and it is for the good. He acknowledged the fact that if he had won, he would have been in a different state of mind which would have somewhat affected his game plan for the other tournaments. He said “I talked about it with my team: if I had won Wimbledon, I would have struggled to find the motivation immediately afterward. I wouldn’t have anything to prove to anyone.“
He believes that the loss at his debut finals boosted his morale and he is now super confident and motivated to do it once again as he was so close to the title. He further added “I think any tennis player would want to win Wimbledon one day. I look at my career and I think most people, myself included, would say my window of opportunity to reach a Grand Slam final was closed. I think Wimbledon is the biggest tournament. I was only one step away from the title.“
The Aussie player has also received a wild-card entry for the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati which starts in August, just ahead of the US Open 2022.
