“If you lose, you will be angry” Nick Kyrgios questions critics of his label of ‘Bad Boy of Tennis’

World No. 78 Nick Kyrgios made a good return to the Tour as he reached the semi-finals in the 2022 Stuttgart Open only to lose to former World No. 1 Andy Murray. It was the seventh meeting between the two and Murray extended his lead in the head-to-head to 6-1 by winning the match 7-6(5), 6-2.

With both being good players on the surface, it was a brilliant match that also had its fair share of controversy with Nick smashing his racket on the ground and receiving a point penalty for it and later revealing that he received racial slurs throughout the match. Nick’s behaviour has given him the moniker of ‘Bad Boy of Tennis’, which the Australian fails to understand.

With Nick having already paid heavy fines earlier in the season for his on-court outbursts and has historically as well been one of the biggest fine payers, the 27-year-old is reluctant to change himself just for the satisfaction and wish of his critics who don’t like to see the human side of himself.

“I love that people follow me and come to see me in the different tournaments and that they like my way to play I am proud of my style. Being able to prove it is also a reward for me. I don’t understand why they think of me [as a bad boy]. I’m 27 years old now and I’ve been playing like this since I was ten.

“I have always been very emotional and ambitious. I’m not going to change. Because I think the fans want to see exciting and intense games. If you lose, you will be angry. It’s normal, it’s human. Some show it more and some less,” said Nick in comments reported by Spanish newspaper, Ultima Hora.

The run to the semis will see Nick rise in 13 ranking places to become the new World No. 65 as he inches closer towards entering the Top-50 once again. He will next play at the 2022 Mallorca Open, another ATP-250 event in his bid to regain his best form ahead of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.
