The World No.1 Iga Swiatek was recently defeated by Jessica Pegula at the Canadian Open. According to Iga, it was one of the most intense and grueling matches. The World No. 4 gave Swiatek a run for her money. She broke Swiatek’s serve 11 times and managed to convert the big points. The Polish player lost to Pegula 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.
The match drew a lot of flak for the Polish star, as fans had higher expectations of her. Swiatek got broken 11 times during the match, which is the most she has ever gotten broken in a single WTA main draw match.
She admitted her faults during the after-match press conference, saying that the game was physically tough on her. Swiatek only has 16 hours to recover and didn’t sleep well the day before. World No. 1 said that it is always complicated after a game like that. She stated that she wasn’t making excuses by saying this. The Polish player also shared that it was just the reality of being a tennis player, and she did everything she could. She refused to accept that physicality could be a reason why she lost.
“Sure, I wasn’t that fresh today, but physicality is never a reason I usually lose games, so I wouldn’t say that had an influence,” Swiatek said. (H/T: Tennis365)
Speaking about her abysmal performance, Swiatek regretted not starting strong and praised Pegula for really pushing her. She said that Pegula fought for every point, and she tried her best to match her.
Jessica Pegula is in the Canadian Open Finals
The American player Jessica Pegula defeated the World No. 1 to reach the finals of the Canadian Open in 2023. She won 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-4 in an intense match against the top-seeded player. She will now be facing the Russian player Liudmila Samsonova after the Russian registered a dominating win over the World No. 3 Elena Rybakina (6-1, 1-6, 2-6). The head-to-head record between the two now has Samsonova in the lead with 3-0.
Pegula and Samsonova, both, are very strong contenders, but the scheduling conflicts could prove to be a roadblock for them. Many fans have raised concerns about the same. Due to rain in Montreal, the Russian player’s semi-final match was pushed to the same day as the finals. This could cause Samsonova to be fatigued and influence her performance.
