In a recent interview with Wprost, Iga Swiatek, a tennis player from Poland, expressed her opinions on war and the responsibility of athletes in society. Swiatek talked about the negative impact of hate and political tensions and highlighted the role of public figures in speaking out. According to Swiatek, war is not a political issue, but a concern about the pain and suffering of individuals.
“War for me is not about politics, but about people’s suffering, and that is why I decided to speak out,” Iga Swiatek said. Swiatek also talked about the contentious issue of Russian and Belarusian athletes participating in tennis tournaments. Regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in tennis competitions, Swiatek stated that this issue has raised ethical concerns for certain players, particularly following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

She urges other public figures and athletes to follow suit, emphasizing the significance of taking a stand for what is just and leveraging their impact to make a difference.

Anastasia Potapova responds to Iga Swiatek’s criticism of wearing Spartak jersey

Anastasia Potapova, a tennis player from Russia, has reacted to remarks made by Iga Swiatek of Poland. Swiatek had raised concerns about Potapova’s wearing of a Spartak Moscow T-shirt during her match against Jessica Pegula from the United States at the Indian Wells competition.
In an earlier statement, Potapova had expressed her admiration for the Spartak Moscow soccer club. In reply to Swiatek’s statements, Potapova stated: “Every person has the right to choose: so to go to the match in a Spartak T-shirt was my personal choice. She condemned me, but I don’t care about her complaints, neither hot nor cold. If she wants to blame me for something, then I wish her good luck. I don’t pay any attention to it.”
For those who may not be aware, Iga Swiatek had expressed her opinion that Anastasia Potapova should not have revealed her loyalties during the match, even if she was a fan of the team. This dialogue has once again highlighted the ongoing political tensions between Poland and Russia, which have impacted athletes and sporting events. Nevertheless, Potapova seems to be unaffected by the discussion and intends to persist in representing herself and her nation.
