For the past 65 weeks, Iga Swiatek has dominated the WTA Rankings, cementing her position as the best player in women’s tennis. Her consistent performances have kept the Pole at the top, with no one coming close to challenging her for the No. 1 spot, until recently.
The battle for the top spot has intensified in 2023, with Aryna Sabalenka emerging as a serious contender to replace Iga Swiatek as the No.1-ranked player in women’s tennis.
Aryna Sabalenka has had a remarkable start to the 2023 season, winning the Australian Open and the Madrid Open. These victories have earned her enough points to lead the 2023 WTA Race and pose a significant threat to Swiatek’s reign.
At the recent Roland Garros tournament, Sabalenka came close to dethroning Swiatek but fell short. Now, as Wimbledon approaches, Sabalenka sees another opportunity to claim the top spot in women’s tennis. As of the beginning of the Championships, Swiatek currently has 9050 points to her name, while Sabalenka trails behind with 8066 points accumulated over the past year.
Wimbledon offers a significant number of points, with 2000 points on offer for the champion. This is because of the exceptional rule of offering no ranking points for the 2022 edition. Swiatek’s comfortable lead of 984 points gives her some breathing room, but she cannot afford to be complacent.

Dethroning Iga Swiatek as No.1: Roadmap for Aryna Sabalenka
To dethrone Iga Swiatek and claim the No.1 spot, Arna Sabalenka has a challenging path ahead. If Swiatek loses in the opening four rounds, Sabalenka will need to reach at least the final to secure the top position on the WTA Tour.
Even if Swiatek progresses to the quarterfinals, Sabalenka must win the title to have a chance at becoming the World No.1. However, if the Pole makes it to the final, then the gap would become so large for Sabalenka to bridge that even a title at Wimbledon won’t make her the new no. 1.
Despite the mounting pressure, Swiatek enters Wimbledon with a sense of confidence and focus. She has proven herself on the grass surface with a few notable performances, including a semifinal appearance at Bad Homburg.
The battle for the World No. 1 spot between Swiatek and Sabalenka promises to be enthralling. Both players are considered favorites for the title, alongside defending champion Elena Rybakina.
Sabalenka mentioned in the Wimbledon pre-championship interview that she embraces the opportunity to be mentioned alongside the great players of the sport. She believes that focus and her best tennis will be the key to success at Wimbledon.
As Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka prepare to face off at Wimbledon, the stakes are high. Swiatek’s reign as the World No. 1 is under siege, with Sabalenka determined to claim the top spot.
The battle for the No. 1 ranking adds an extra layer of excitement to the tournament, as fans eagerly await the outcome. Only time will tell who will emerge victorious and etch their name in tennis history. The women’s singles tournament at Wimbledon this year is sure to be an exciting one.
