Often regarded as the ‘World Cup of Tennis’ among enthusiasts of the game, the stage is set for the United Cup, which will be held this year in the Australian cities of Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney. The event will feature teams from 18 different countries and will be held over 10 days, from the 29th of December to the 7th of January.
This time around, the event boasts the presence of five of the world’s top 10 women and nine of the world’s top 20 men on the WTA and ATP Rankings list respectively. World No.2, Iga Swiatek, and World No.11, Hubert Hurkacz’s participation at the event makes Poland the top seed in the event.
24-time Grand Slam title champion, Novak Djokovic will also be playing for his country, Serbia as the country makes its debut. This will be the second time Djokovic will be seen on the court following his record-shattering win at the US Open. The 36-year-old maestro last represented his country at the Davis Cup recently.
Other notable names in the tournament include Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, who will be representing the Czech Republic at the tournament. American top seeds Jessica Pegula and 10th-ranked Taylor Fritz will be representing the United States at the event. However, World No. 3, Coco Gauff, will not be playing at the games. Men’s World No. 2, Carlos Alcaraz, will also mark his absence.
List of qualified teams for the ‘United Cup’ 2023
According to the list of qualified countries released by the United Cup, a total of 16 countries have confirmed their presence at the upcoming event in the month of December. The tournament will feature some of the best tennis players on the WTA and ATP circuits.
