The debate about moving the WTA Finals to Saudi Arabia is well and truly alive. As reports have emerged that the WTA is getting closer to signing a deal with the Middle Eastern country, the talks about the decision being the right one have started again. WTA stars Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula were also asked about this potential move to Saudi Arabia.
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has said that she has always believed that it would be better to keep the WTA Finals in Europe. However, the Polish ace does not want to get much into it. Swiatek suggested that people ask WTA about the issue as they are the most updated about it.
I was always in the group of players that said it would be nice to have finals in Europe. But we’re still waiting for the decision. We, as players, don’t really have much of an impact on where the finals will be held. So, it’s better for you guys to directly ask this question to WTA, cause they have all the information up to date.Iga Swiatek said.
She added that she is focused on her game right now.
I already kinda stopped being on a roof every day because there’s so much information and rumors as well. I just honestly wanna focus on wherever I am right now.Iga Swiatek added.
Jessica Pegula also shares her views on the entire matter
While Iga Swiatek has shared her preferences about the venue for the WTA Finals, American tennis star and last year’s WTA Finals finalist Jessica Pegula has also shared her views on the matter. The 29-year-old is not totally against the move.
Pegula has said that it should be an informed decision, after analysing the pros and cons. The American says that the WTA must considering moving the year-ending championship to Saudi Arabia only if the pros outweights the cons.
We’d obviously have to see there be a lot of pros overweighing the cons to feel comfortable going there, whether that’s seeing them as a group, maybe have to donate money to women’s sports or women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, to see some sort of change or action going towards helping those causes in their country.
Jessica Pegula said.
Notably, the WTA has not yet announced the moving of WTA Finals to Saudi Arabia. However, the women’s tennis governing body is nearing a consensus. Also, with the ATP and Saudi Arabia’s PIF signing a multi-year contract has tilted the odds in the latter’s favor. It seems like only a matter of time that the WTA announces Saudi Arabia as the new host venue for the prestigious tournament.
