Iga Swiatek continued her dominant run at the WTA Finals 2023 on Thursday, defeating Coco Gauff in straight sets 6-0, 7-5 to move to 2-0 in the round-robin stage.
Iga Swiatek has continued her bagel dominance, becoming the first player to have 22 bagel sets in consecutive seasons since Steffi Graf and Monica Seles in 1991 and 1992. With her 7-6(3), 6-0 victory against World No. 6 Marketa Vondrousova at the WTA Finals on Monday, Swiatek became the first player in 31 years to win more than 20 sets by a 6-0 scoreline in back-to-back seasons.
She has also matched Chris Evert’s record of bagels this year. Swiatek’s latest bagel came in her second match at the WTA Finals in Cancun, where she defeated reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff.
The 22-year-old Pole was in cruise control from start to finish. It was her ninth win in 10 meetings against Gauff, and it was her second straight bagel at the tournament.
Swiatek’s performance against Gauff was incredible. She was relentless on her serve, winning 80% of her first-serve points and 75% of her second-serve points. She was also aggressive on her groundstrokes, hitting 17 winners to Gauff’s just 5.
Swiatek is playing like a woman on a mission, and will be tough to beat if the former World No. 1 continues to play at this phenominal level. Notably, she is one of the favorites to win the WTA Finals, and could be back to No. 1 in the world very soon.
Iga Swiatek matches her own bagel record
Iga Swiatek is on a mission to reclaim her No. 1 ranking, and she took another step towards that goal with a dominant straight-sets victory over Coco Gauff at the WTA Finals on Thursday.
The 22-year-old Pole is known for her aggressive and relentless playing style, which often leaves her opponents overwhelmed and unable to keep up. The Polish star is the first player to win 22 sets with a 6-0 scoreline. Ironically, she was also the one who created this record in 2022.
Swiatek’s bagel dominance is a testament to her incredible skill and mental toughness. She is able to maintain a high level of focus and intensity throughout her matches, and she is not afraid to go for winners even when she is up against the best players in the world.
Swiatek’s bagel dominance is an impressive feat, and it is one that is likely to continue for many years to come.
