Iga Swiatek stated the need of equalizing price money across the WTA and ATP tournaments. World no.1 vocalized about better opportunities in the Tennis field but also mentioned the need for work on various terms and fields.
The Polish player recently won the Stuttgart Open and took away respectful prize money of 100,000 Euros, while the men’s singles player Carlos Alcaraz was presented with an enormous amount of 475,000 Euros. The variation among the prizes drew a lot of attention from the media as they questioned Swiatek about her standpoint.
“Well, it’s kind of obvious what my opinion is, because tennis in one of the sports where we speak about equality. I think it’s better than most of the sports anyway. But still, there is a lot we can work on in terms of, you know, getting equal prize money on some WTA tournament compared to ATP on the same level”, she said at the press conference.
Swiatek further mentioned that Grand Slams do have equality in cash prizes and that is agreeable. But due to various political and business issues involved, she observed that much can’t be said on her part.
“Grand Slams are already even, as we know. That’s nice, but for sure it would be good if WTA would focus on that, but I really don’t want to get into that, because it’s a lot of business and sometimes politics. I don’t think I have, you know, a lot of influence.”, she further added.
The Roland Garros defending champion is all prepared to win another accolade at Madrid Open. She will be facing Julia Grabher in the round of 64 tomorrow.
