Iga Swiatek said in a post-match press conference that her fuel tank has been completely drained and is empty now. She is looking forward to taking a mini-break to refill her energy until the US Open.
The Pole lost to seventh seed Coco Gauff in the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open 2023. She was defeated with a score line of 6-7 (7), 6-3, 4-6. The top-seeded player had a 7-0 lead against the American player. However, Gauff fought hard against Swiatek to break the chain of consecutive losses against Swiatek.
The 22-year-old player felt that the loss was a blessing in disguise for her. She stated that she felt completely fatigued as she participated in the tournaments continuously without any rest. “From my perspective, I would say my tank of fuel is pretty empty. Honestly, I’m not even going to kind of regret a lot because I’m happy that I’m going to have days off now,” she expressed.
The World No. 1 player was gracious in her defeat as she praised the 19-year-old Gauff. She remarked, “Coco, for sure, she played great tennis. I got to check, but I think her first serve was faster than most of the matches we played against each other. She played more in, even though she’s risking with that speed.”
Iga made 46 unforced errors during the course of the match. This could be a result of the erratic schedules that Iga had previously spoken about. The WTA and the ATP have come under fire for their poor organization of matches and negligence toward the well-being of players. Elena Rybakina, Novak Djokovic, and other players like Swietak have rallied against such tiring timetables and have demanded that they take a player’s health into consideration.
Coco Gauff on her semi-final victory against Iga Swiatek

Coco Gauff managed to clinch an astonishing victory against the top-seeded player, Iga Swiatek. In a post-match press conference, she made an honest confession about it. She admitted that she didn’t want to end up with a record like Gael Monfils against Novak Djokovic. For context, Novak Djokovic has a 19-0 record against Gael Monfils.
Previously, the same pattern was being repeated with Gauff, who had suffered seven straight-set losses against Swiatek. She was quoted as saying, “No offence to Gael [Monfils], but I did not want that record, like the Novak and Gael record.“
