Iga Swiatek‘s chances of participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics have become slimmer. She decided not to join Team Poland in the Billie Jean King (BJK) Cup. Instead, she will focus on the WTA Finals in Cancun starting on October 29th. This event features the top 8 players of the season competing for the championship.

The issue arises because the BJK Cup starts just two days after the WTA finals in Spain. To participate, players would need to travel from one continent to another, which is a significant challenge.

Because of this scheduling conflict, Swiatek won’t be able to join the Polish team at the BJK Cup. Representing Poland at the tournament will be Magda Linette, Magdalena Frech, Katarzyna Kawa, and Weronika Falkowska.

It’s worth noting that if the Polish team reaches the final of the BJK Cup, Swiatek might miss next year’s Olympic Games. This is because Poland would directly qualify for the Paris Olympics, bypassing the qualifiers, and Swiatek’s absence could affect their chances.

Iga Swiatek and the WTA’s scheduling

Iga Swiatek has been rather public in voicing her dissatisfaction with the WTA’s inadvertent scheduling. She pulled out of the Guadalajara Open owing to a change in schedule, while criticizing the women’s tennis body for not caring about players during the Canada Open.

Swiatek lashed out at the WTA last year after withdrawing from the Billie Jean King Cup finals, claiming that playing two high-intensity tournaments (the WTA Finals and the Billie Jean King Cup finals) back-to-back is not good for the players. The Polish ace has expressed his dissatisfaction with the WTA’s failure to address such a basic issue.

“I’m disappointed that [the] tennis governing bodies didn’t come to an agreement on something as basic as the calendar of tournaments, giving us only one day to travel through the globe and changing the time zone,” Swiatek had written on social media.“This situation is not safe for our health and could cause injury,” she continued writing.
