Poland’s tennis star Iga Swiatek could not control her tears as her team lost to Germany at the 2024 United Cup. The World No.1 who gave it all at the multi-team event ended up on the losing side as Germany pulled off a remarkable comeback victory to lift the title. Meanwhile, Poland had to finish second despite dominating their opponents throughout the tournament.
In the summit clash too, Poland started with a terrific win as Swiatek beat Angelique Kerber in straight sets (6-3, 6-0). Hubert Hurkacz also started off well as he won the first set against Alexander Zverev. However, the German ace bounced back to win the second set which was yet again closely contested.
Zverev eventually won the match 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. Germany carried the winning momentum in their mixed doubles match as well. Zverev and Laura Siegemund joined hands to pin down Swiatek and Hurkacz. The Polish pair lost the match despite making a comeback in the second set. Eventually, Germany were the champions with the scoreline reading 2-1 in their favor.
This defeat left Iga Swiatek in tears as she found it hard to comprehend the fact that her team lost despite the Polish ace winning her every singles match. Swiatek was seen teary-eyed after Germany’s win.
Swiatek also penned an emotional note on social media after Poland’s defeat to Germany.
Iga Swiatek is proud to win matches for Poland
Although Iga Swiatek and Team Poland could not lay hands on the elusive United Cup title, the World No.1 did give her best performance. Swiatek remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.
The 22-year-old talked about her impressive singles campaign after the win against Kerber. Swiatek said she is proud to be winning matches for her country.
I feel like I really improved during the preseason, and I'm happy that I played such solid matches here. It's really fun and it's really exciting to play with my teammates and for Poland. I'm really excited to win all my matches for Poland.Iga Swiatek said. (H/T: WTA)
It is worth mentioning that with these wins at the 2024 United Cup, Swiatek extended her winning streak to 16 matches, a stretch that began last fall with runs through Beijing and Cancun to end the season.
