In a shocking turn of events, former World No. 1, Iga Swiatek lost her first-round match at Japan Open. Her defeat came against Russian player Veronika Kudermetova.

The highly anticipated match had the audience on the edge of their seats as it was the first time Swiatek was going to play after being dethroned as world champion. The match began in Tokyo, with Swiatek, who is a former Roland Garros champion and the youngest woman to win the French Open since 1992, considered the favorable winner

However, Kudermetova played against all the expectations and delivered a stunning performance that left Swiatek gasping for breath. She won the first set easily by securing a lead and thrashing the Polish at 6-2. Swiatek managed to equate the score, but ultimately, it was Kudermetova who emerged victorious, securing the match with a final set score (6-2, 2-6, 6-4).

Iga Swiatek lost her number 1 crown just a few months ago during the US Open. An anticipated winner, she was shockingly defeated by Jelena Ostapenko in the 4th round. Not being able to make it to the finals and performing poorly in the previous hard court circuits, Swiatek lost the position to Belarusian player, Aryna Sabalenka.

Iga Swiatek’s early exit sparks social media storm

So far, the Pole’s season has been pretty average, as compared to her performances in the last two years. She could not win the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open as she fell to Kazakh powerhouse, Elena Rybakina in the 4th round. Subsequently, she faced consecutive losses in further WTA events such as Indian Wells, the Miami Open, the Italian Open, and the Canadian Open. However, she secured victory in Stuttgart, by defeating Sabalenka. She also won her third Roland Garros.

Swiatek, who is known for her mental toughness and great performances, is now at the center of online criticism, with supporters voicing their displeasure and questioning the causes that led to this surprising upset.
