World No.1 Iga Swiatek has spoken about Simona Halep’s doping scandal ahead of the 2022 WTA Finals. Halep tested positive for a dope test a few weeks ago. She tested positive for a banned substance, Roxadustat after which she has been provisionally suspended. However, Halep has claimed that she hasn’t taken any banned substance intentionally and has vowed to clear her name as soon as possible.

Swiatek, who is currently in Fort Worth for the WTA Finals, answered the media over a question regarding Simona Halep’s doping fiasco. She said that the news was very confusing for her as she didn’t expect it at all. She further said that for her, Halep was a person who couldn’t cheat and also called her a great example.

She then added that she doesn’t know much about the logistics of Halep’s situation but hoped that the whole debacle will be more clear to the fans in the near future. She also expressed her disappointment and sympathized with the 31-year-old Romanian.

“So hopefully… I don’t know how it works in terms of the system that they’re going to… Is she going to be tested a couple of more times or whatever? Hopefully, it’s going to be more clear for fans and for us. But, yeah, it’s kind of like disappointing, and she must feel really bad,” she added.

While Halep is provisionally banned, Swiatek will play the last tournament of the season in Fort Worth this week where she’ll enter as the favorite once again. She is the top seed and will look to win the WTA Finals for a 9th title of the season.
