Defending US Open champion Iga Swiatek had a rough day as she bowed out of the 2023 US Open after losing to Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round. Swiatek was ousted in a three-setter and it was heartbreaking for the Pole. But it was not surprising for many as Ostapenko had clearly an upper hand coming into the match. The Latvian ace leads the head-to-head record between the two players 3-0. In fact, it is 4-0 now. 

Although it was for the first time that the two players faced each other at the Flushing Meadows, Ostapenko had no trouble toppling Swiatek. The 26-year-old Latvian took the game in an hour and 48 minutes after being a set down. For Swiatek, it was a tough loss considering how well she had been playing this year all along.

The Pole had won the French Open title and had also made it to the quarterfinals at The Championships. She came into the year’s last Grand Slam as a hot favorite for the title. Swiatek did great in her first three matches, winning them in straight sets. However, in the fourth round, the Pole lost touch and was handed a defeat.

This defeat in the fourth round marked the end of her US Open campaign as well as her reign as the World No.1 player. Aryna Sabalenka replaced the 22-year-old Pole at the top of the WTA rankings. While many felt sorry for Iga Swiatek, a few fans took a dig at her for losing to Jelena Ostapenko four times in a row. A fan also called Swiatek “a bum”.

This defeat against Ostapenko has affected Swiatek a lot as the Polish ace looked distraught after the loss. Swiatek also had no clue about what went wrong for her as she said, “I don’t really know what happened with my game“. The 22-year-old said that she felt no control and made so many mistakes but could not figure out why.
