Mikaela Shiffrin was congratulated by Iga Swiatek for breaking the record of the alpine skier with the most World Cup wins. Swiatek compared Shiffrin to tennis greats such as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Serena Williams. Shiffrin achieved her 87th World Cup win on Saturday by winning the Slalom race in Åre, Sweden.

This triumph allowed her to surpass Ingemar Stenmark’s previous record of 86 victories, making her the most successful alpine skier, regardless of gender, in the history of the sport’s World Cup. Swiatek is a huge fan of Shiffrin and lauded her after her latest record-win.

In a press conference following her second-round victory over Claire Liu at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Iga Swiatek expressed admiration for Mikaela Shiffrin’s extraordinary dominance in alpine skiing. Swiatek drew parallels between Shiffrin’s accomplishments and those of the Big-3 in tennis and Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion. Swiatek’s remarks came after her resounding 6-0, 6-1 win over Liu.

She said, “Hmm. Well, any of the Big 3 guys and Serena, I think. Yeah, she just dominated the sport. But on the other hand, the Big 3 had each other to kind of compete against each other, and she’s like dominating. She’s like better than anyone. I think she’s working much better than — she’s, like, making everything too, like — sorry. To like opt- — she’s making everything to optimize her potential and to just ski well mentally, physically, and technically.”

Iga Swiatek cruises into the third round at Indian Wells Open

The world No.1, is on her way to defend the title here as she reached the third round of the tournament. She will be facing Bianca Andreescu in the round of 32. During the press conference, Iga Swiatek discussed the weight of expectations from her supporters and acknowledged that negative comments on social media occasionally affected her more than they should.

The Polish athlete recounted an instance when she lost the final in Dubai after winning the title in Doha the previous week, and how some people expressed disappointment in her. Swiatek expressed her regret, noting that such a result would have been considered “amazing” for her last year.

In their previous encounter at the quarterfinals of the 2022 Italian Open, Iga Swiatek defeated Bianca Andreescu 7-6(7-2), 6-0, giving Swiatek a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head record. It will be an exciting context while Swiatek looks to move a step closer to the title.
