Iga Swiatek is the hot-favorite to win the Australian Open 2023 ladies singles title this year. She is the World No.1 and has won three Grand Slam titles in her career till now. In Poland, she is the superstar of tennis. She is the ‘Pride of Poland’. However, this is something new for her. She did not expect to receive so much love and support from Polish population.

Poland is not known for tennis. The only player which made significant traction in tennis before Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz is Agnieszka Radwańska. The 21-year-old took the baton from her and brought Polish tennis to the center of the Tennis World. With her efforts, Polish team qualified for the inaugural edition of the United Cup with World No.2 ranking. The Polish team reached the semi-finals of this tournament before losing to eventual winner Team USA.

Iga Swiatek made her best finish at the Australian Open last season. She reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2022 but lost to eventual finalist Danielle Collins 4-6, 1-6. But as both former champions Serena Williams and Ash Barty retire from professional tennis, tennis legends are counting on Iga Swiatek to dazzle in the first Grand Slam of the season.

I think right now she’s by far and away the best player, she’s a fantastic athlete, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a young woman get to slide into the corners, it reminds me of Novak quite a bit. So I would be surprised if she didn’t win a couple more French Opens at least, and she’s learned to play on hard courts so there’s no question that she’s the favorite in every tournament she plays,” John McEnroe told in an interview.

Martina Navratilova believes the Polish tennis player’s consistency is her major strength. She thinks besides winning majors, she will be able to keep her No.1 spot till the end of the year.

“I do, I do. I don’t see anybody knocking her off — because she’s so consistent. She wins majors — and she’s consistent. Usually, it’s one or the other. She’s got them both going on at the same time. I think to see if she’s making any changes, adding to her game again. This past year, she made more forays to the net, and it made a big difference,” she said in an interview with WTA.
