World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and World No. 37 Alize Cornet will be engaged in a promising battle in Round 3 of the ongoing 2022 Wimbledon Championships with the match scheduled on Saturday, 2nd July 2022. Both the ladies are yet to cross the 4th round mark at the Grand Slam but the only difference remains that Cornet is making her 15th appearance while Iga is making her 3rd.
Iga comes into the third round with a straight-set win over Jana Fett in the first round followed by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove. Cornet is yet to drop a set with straight-set wins over Yulia Putintseva in the first round and Claire Liu in the second round to set up the clash with Swiatek which will be the first time the two players meet in a match.

“I have nothing to lose”: Alize Cornet on clash with Iga Swiatek
With her second-round win, Iga has now won 37 consecutive matches breaking Venus Williams‘ record of most consecutive wins in the 21st century with the American going on a run of 35 wins. While the all-time record is with Martina Navratilova who went 74 matches unbeaten, Iga’s streak is certainly commendable. With six titles in the streak so far which includes the 2022 French Open, 4 WTA-1000 titles in Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome along with a WTA-500 title in Stuttgart, the Pole last lost a match back in February.
“The series of Iga Swiatek will have to end at some point, so I don’t know who will beat her, but you have to believe in it. If we can take her, currently, I think it’s on grass, because that’s where she has a little less experience. And on this surface, it feels a bit like anything can happen. Me, I have my fifteen years of experience on grass which will perhaps help me.
“But indeed, if her streak is to be broken, I think it will be here at Wimbledon. I will feast. I hope to take a Central or a Court No. 1. I think it will. Me, in that, I have nothing to lose, and we know that in these situations, in general, quite unexpected things can happen. I’m looking forward to this game,” said Cornet in comments reported by L’Equipe.
