Iga Swiatek issues a snarky apology to Chris Evert after breaking her record at Qatar Open
Iga Swiatek makes a snarky apology to Chris Evert after breaking her record with winning the Qatar Open.
Iga and Chris
The world No. 1, Iga Swiatek, breaks a long-existing record of Chris Evert after her recent win in the Qatar Open. The Polish star couldn’t start the year as she wished, as she lost to Elena Rybakina in the fourth round of the Australian Open. However, she made a remarkable comeback in the Qatar Open and won it convincingly. She now holds the record for losing the fewest games to win a WTA title by a woman.
Chris Evert held the record for 49 years when she lost just eight games to win the title in Indianapolis in 1974. Iga just lost five games to win the Qatar Open, stunning the entire world. She absolutely smashed her opponents throughout the tournament and never gave them a chance. However, she gave a snarky apology to Chris for breaking her record after winning the title.
In the post-match interview, the Polish player spoke and said “Well, a lot, but on the other hand, when I was playing, I didn’t really think about that (smiling). So it’s not like I wanted to achieve that, but for sure it shows that I used my chances, all my chances that I had during this tournament to put pressure on my opponents and to break them. So I’m just happy that I was so efficient. And, sorry, Chris.”
She further continued and said, “Yeah, well, it’s also, you know, because basically I had a bye, and Belinda pulled out, so I had little bit easier situation to do it, but I’m still proud of it, so I’m happy.”
Iga Swiatek returns to winning ways in the Qatar Open
In the finals clash between the top two seeds, Iga won in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) and won her first title of the year. However, she received a walkover from Belinda Bencic, and hence she was lucky in terms of achieving the record. However, many players over the years have tried breaking this record and came close to it as well but weren’t successful.
Fans and the tennis world expected a fight from Jessica Pegula in the finals, but even the second seed had no answers to Iga’s gameplay. After a heartbreaking Australian Open earlier this year, she was determined to win this tournament and gain confidence. Iga’s next target will be winning the Dubai Tennis Championship, as she will be facing Leylah Fernandez in her first round.
