Iga Swiatek jokes on how Frances Tiafoe requested her to delay her result to get more preparation time ahead of his opener at the US Open 2023

Reigning US Open women’s singles Iga Swiatek started her campaign in dominating fashion. The World No. 1 routed the Swedish pro Rebecca Peterson in straight sets, winning the match 6-0, 6-1. Swiatek extended her US Open win streak to eight with the win. That’s not all, the first set was the 66th bagel of Swiatek’s career.

The match ended in just under an hour. In an on-court interview after the match, Swiatek jokingly mentioned, “Frances [Tiafoe] told me yesterday not to make it too quick because he doesn’t have time to warm up.” The second-ranked American, Tiafoe, is scheduled to play next at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Swiatek is defending her No. 1 spot and the title at this year’s competition. World no. 2 Aryna Sabalenka just needs to match or better Swiatek to bag the World No. 1 for the first time ever.

The 4-time Grand Slam champion was good on the serve, hitting 4 aces to Peterson’s 0. Swiatek’s dominance is reflected in the fact that the Pole won 52 out of 74 points in the match. The 22-year-old kept her serve throughout the match, saving three break points.

With her first-round win today, Iga Swiatek has secured her 16th successive win in the first round of a Grand Slam. The world no. 1 holds an 18-1 record in the first rounds of Grand Slams. Her only first-round exit at a Grand Slam came at the 2019 Wimbledon. With an impressive record, Swiatek hasn’t lost a set in the first round of majors since the 2019 US Open.

Earlier, Iga Swiatek joined the men’s World No. 1 for a game of foot-tennis against the YouTuber ‘Dude Perfect’. Here’s a clip of the point that the pair won, showing their superior soccer skills:

Iga Swiatek is scheduled to compete against the Aussie Daria Saville in the second-round match. Swiatek leads the head-to-head, winning the only encounter between the pair. The world number one has won four titles this year, including the French Open.
