Iga Swiatek opens up about the ‘incredibly demanding’ pressure she has had to handle since becoming world number 1
Iga Swiatek, the 21-year-old Polish tennis professional has the world at her feet at the moment. Currently ranked world number 1, there are very few players on the women’s circuit who can give competition to the Polish star. Swiatek recently won the US Open title after she defeated Ons Jabeur in the penultimate match.
Being the world number at such a young age comes with its own challenges. Being so young, Iga Swiatek surely has a lot of eyes on her, and handling that pressure is no easy task for a young player. The Polish star seems to be doing a fantastic job handling that pressure as she keeps winning titles after titles.
Talking about handling the pressure, she said, “The fact that Ash decided to end his career, I was No. 2 for less than a week, and then in one day I became No. 1, only meant that I had to quickly find myself in a new, incredibly demanding situation.”
“It was hard not to have expectations after winning six tournaments for six months. These expectations were, in a way, and at one point I formulated them for myself, but also the outside world imposed them on me. There were voices of anxiety about what was happening to me after losing one game,” she added further
Iga Swiatek makes her way into the quarter-finals of the Ostrava Open
After winning the US Open, Iga Swiatek is now competing at the Ostrava Open. The Polish star went up against Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round of the tournament. The first match ended in an abrupt manner as Tomljanovic had to retire from the match due to a knee injury. Swiatek was the favorite in the match but she progresses further due to a walkover.
She will now be taking on Caty Mcnally for a place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
