World No.1 Iga Swiatek was so mature in answering a question about Alexander Zverev serving on the ATP Players’ Council despite charges of domestic violence pressed against the German. The Polish ace said that she was not in the best position to judge the situation but shared her opinion saying it is definitely not good.
Swiatek was asked about the appropriateness of Zverev serving on the council despite not being clear of the charges put against him. The 21-year-old took some time but came up with a near-perfect answer. The Pole said that there is no good answer to that question.
She then said that it is up to the ATP to decide if they want to keep the German ace on the council. The World No.1 shared her opinion saying it is not good to promote a player who is facing such charges.
Any answer that I give, I mean, there's no good answer to that. I think it's up to ATP what they decide. For sure it's not good when a player who's facing charges like that is kind of being promoted. But I don't know the result of the investigation and am also not sure about the history of other such charges. So, you should ask ATP what they want to do with it.Iga Swiatek said in the press conference.
Alexander Zverev to face trial in latest domestic violence case
Speaking of the domestic violence case Alexander Zverev is involved in, the German will face a trial in May this year. While Zverev was issued a penalty order in October ordering him to pay fines amounting to 450,000 euros ($493,000) by a Berlin court, the player contested the decision. As a result, he will be appearing for a trial in May.
German news agency dpa reported that Zverev’s trial will start on May 31, which is during this year’s French Open. However, the news agency cited a court spokesperson who said Zverev will not need to make a personal appearance and can be represented by a lawyer.
It is worth mentioning that this is the second domestic violence case against the German. He was earlier accused of physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend. However, the ATP ruled last January that Zverev would not face any disciplinary action after its investigation into the case found “insufficient evidence” to substantiate the claims.
Now, Zverev has been included in the 2024 ATP Players’ Council which has clearly not sit well with the fans. However, there has been no statement from the ATP on this matter so far.
