Iga Swiatek

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is now a 3-time Grand Slam champion as she defeats World No. 5 Ons Jabeur to win the 2022 US Open, her second Grand Slam title of the season and her first-ever on hardcourts having earlier won the French Open in 2020 and 2022.

Swiatek won the match 6-2, 7-6(5) to defeat the Tunisian and to hand her back-to-back Grand Slam final defeats as Ons was also the finalist at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships but failed to capture the title as her hunt for her first-ever Grand Slam title continues on despite brilliant performances this season.

Swiatek was in control of the match throughout and raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set. Ons tried to pull back things but it was not enough has the Pole played her game to every detail of her tactic to win the first set in 30 minutes and inch closer to the glittering silver trophy of the major.

The second set saw a similar start by both players as Ons was broken in her first game and Swiatek held once again to go 3-0 up. Jabeur however made life difficult for Iga with some brilliant planning as all shots were hit on Iga’s forehand denying her the chance to unleash her backhand.

The World No. 1 saw her lead reducing as Ons broke her in the 7th game to take the match at 4-3. While Ons made it 4-4, Swiatek had to possibly play the toughest game of the match to make it 5-4 after a couple of deuces and breakpoints for Ons were played out but the Pole managed to move further closer.

With a clutch service game at 5-5, Iga forced Ons to serve it out to force a tiebreaker and Ons managed to save a championship point to force a second set tiebreaker. In a crunch tiebreaker of back-and-forth rallies, Swiatek served for championship point and managed to win the title as Ons hit a forehand outside the court.

Swiatek collapsed on the floor immediately as the ball went out and after a moment of cherishing her success, went to hug Ons who had crossed the net and met Iga in her side of the court showing brilliant sportsmanship despite losing a second successive major.
