Polish tennis megastar, Iga Swiatek, opened up to the media recently about receiving hate online in a press conference following her quarter-final win over Qinwen Zheng in Cincinnati. The World No. 1 talked about how she and her team were being criticized on the Internet for facing losing the first set against Zheng.

Swiatek, while citing the amount of hate she received as ‘ridiculous’, went on further to encourage people to be more thoughtful when they comment on social media platforms. Swiatek beat her Zheng (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) in the last Round of 16. It is interesting to note that Iga’s win over Qinwen Zheng came post her outfit change after the first set. Swiatek credited her coach for the idea as a way to ‘reset’ and change the vibe.

“The amount of hate and criticism that me and my team get after even losing a set is just ridiculous,” the 22-year-old said while addressing the media.

“I’m putting a lot of energy for it not to hit too deeply, but I realized that sometimes people – I don’t know if they’re my fans or not but they want me to play better – cause me to waste a lot of energy to ignore them,” she added on the constant online hate.

The World No. 1 had previously received similar criticism following her defeat in the Finals of the Dubai Championship earlier this year. Swiatek will now face rising teen tennis sensation, Coco Gauff in the semi-finals of the ongoing tournament in Cincinnati in a highly anticipated match between the two.

The clash was a close one between the two Grand Slam winners. Attesting the same during an interview post her match, Swiatek claimed, “It wasn’t easy to adjust to her spin because she’s a lefty.”

The air is abuzz with excitement as the 22-year-old gears up to face nineteen-year-old Coco Gauff in the semi-finals of the ongoing Cincinnati Open on 19th August 2023. The two have previously clashed seven times where the World No. 1 beat the seventh seed on all those occasions. Last time the two faced each other this year at the Quarter-finals of the Roland-Garros where Swiatek beat the American in straight set victories(6-4, 6-2).
