World No.2 Iga Swiatek who defeated Caroline Garcia in the China Open quarterfinals on Friday made a sincere request to the fans. The Polish ace asked fans to turn out in more numbers at the stadiums to cheer for the players after seeing empty stands during her quarterfinal clash.
Iga Swiatek, making her debut in Beijing beat Caroline Garcia 6-7(8), 7-6(5), 6-1 to advance to her 11th semifinal of the season and also the 11th WTA 1000 semifinal of her career. With this win, Swiatek equaled Serena Williams’ (2013) and Simona Halep’s (2015) record for the most hard-court WTA-1000 semifinals in a single season.
However, the Pole was not too happy with the empty stands. Swiatek made a request to the fans during her on-court interview, asking them to come out in large numbers next time the players walk out on the court. She also promised to dish out the best show possible.
“Please come to our matches. We still have a lot of empty seats. Let’s try to fill them out. We’ll do our best to give the best show possible. Thank you for watching. Thank you for all the support all week,” said Swiatek.

Iga Swiatek maintained her phenomenal record in the WTA 1000 quarterfinals as she registered her seventh win on the trot in the third-last stage of the tournament. She is the second player since the format was introduced in 2009 to win her first seven WTA-1000 quarterfinals on this surface after Ashleigh Barty. But it was not an easy win for Swiatek.
Caroline Garcia was up to the challenge as the Frenchwoman served at 71 percent of her first serves in, won 80 percent of her first serve points, and 75 percent of her second serve points. But the Pole was not going to sit idle either. She served at 80 percent and won 89 percent of her first serve points and 86 percent of her second serve points. However, Swiatek could not save the first set as Garcia won it in the tiebreaker.
In the second set, it was another grueling battle. While Swiatek took an early lead and extended it to make 4-1, Garcia stormed back in style. The second set also went into a tiebreaker and Swiatek was not losing it this time. She won it 7-1. By the third set, Garcia was done and dusted and Swiatek took advantage of it, winning it 6-1. The Pole will now face 2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff in the semifinals.
