World No. 1 Iga Swiatek’s march in the Middle East was stopped by Barbora Krejcikova in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championship. After having a dominating run, the 21-year-old lost to the Czech failing to win the second consecutive title after her triumph in Doha a week earlier.
In the Qatar Open, Swiatek had won thirty-six of forty-one games played and was looking set to take the Dubai title as well. But, Krejcikova has some other plans in the banks. Despite the setback, Swiatek did not lose her heart as she shared a message on social media looking back on the last couple of weeks and vowing to keep fighting.
“Yesterday I was still in Dubai, today I’m in Warsaw, and soon in Indian Wells,” she posted on Twitter along with some pictures. “These last few weeks were intense and challenging but we did a lot of good work and progress. I enjoyed tournaments in Doha and Dubai and even though I lost the final in Dubai (huge congrats Barbora!) my level was good despite the infection and I gave it all I could at the moment.”
The three-time Grand Slam champion also acknowledged the pressure of expectations on her. “I can see that some of you have higher expectations of me but well… I’m just human. I will keep my standards high, I will enjoy my time on tour, and keep working hard. At the end of the day that is all I can control. My effort and engagement,” she continued.
She ended the message by thanking everyone and a couple of interesting hashtags. “Thank you all for the support and see you soon! #marathonnotsprint #notarobot.”
Iga Swiatek addressed the claim that the competition is weak on the Tour

The Polish star had a dominating run in the last couple of years. In the 2022 season, Swiatek claimed the US Open and the French Open. In the ranking table, she maintained a huge lead over the second-ranked player as well.
This led many to believe the weak competition on the WTA tour was the main reason for Swiatek’s dominance. After her win over Coco Gauff in the Dubai semifinals, Swiatek tried to discredit these theories. She mentioned that it was the result of her hard work despite what others say.
“I feel like if you work hard and you give 100% on every match, your chances are going to come. So I’m pretty glad that I can play dominant tennis right now, but I’m really ready for every match and I’m really concentrated and motivated,” Swiatek explained. After the Middle East tour, Swiatek will compete in Indian Wells, where she will try to defend her title.
