Iga Swiatek Starstruck after meeting Serena Williams, calls it the ‘highlight’ of her day

The US Open is about to commence with top players getting ready for the prestigious tournament. The championship will start on August 29 and it’ll end on September 11. The US Open has been under much controversy this year as big announcements came pouring through. One of them was, Novak Djokovic‘s withdrawal from the tournament due to his unvaccinated status. But the biggest announcement came from 23-time grand slam champion, Serena Williams, who declared her retirement which will most likely happen after the conclusion of her home tournament.
Williams cited family as one of the reasons for her retirement. In a personal essay for Vogue, she said, “Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.”

After Williams announced her retirement, many prominent players came forward to applaud her professional tennis career. Recently, World No. 1, Iga Swiatek met Serena Williams and tweeted her admiration for her. Iga Swiatek has been having a great season. Swiatek defeated Coco Gauff to claim the French Open title and she’s having a consistent form leading up to the US Open. But the crowd will definitely support Williams, considering every match could be her last one.
Iga Swiatek is not the only one to show her love for the legend. Top players and experts like Rafael Nadal, Naomi Osaka and John McEnroe have shown their appreciation for the former World No.1.
Williams has been struggling with her hamstring injury which took her out of the tour for a few months. She is now better than ever and hoping to claim a record 7th US Open title. Currently, Williams and Chris Evert are tied for the most number of US Open titles with 6 each. Serena Williams will start her US Open campaign on Tuesday, August 30 with her first-round match against Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic.
