Iga Swiatek defeated Maria Sakkari in the final of the 2024 Indian Wells to win the title in phenomenal fashion. The Polish international dominated the game from the very beginning and ended up winning the match 6-4, 6-0 in straight sets. Swiatek was at the top of her game throughout the tournament and she did not lose a single set in the 2024 Indian Wells, which speaks for itself.
Swiatek took on some strong opponents in the tournament but none of them caused her any trouble at all. She defeated Danielle Collins, Linda Noskova, Yulia Putinsteva, Caroline Wozniacki, and Marta Kostyuk en route to the final. She also got a total of 3 bagels to her name in the 2024 Indian Wells, which further goes on to show the dominance she maintained throughout the tournament.
This is her second title of the 2024 tour. Before this, she won the Qatar Open in mid-February. Coincidentally, she did not lose a single set even in that tournament. It is almost a known pattern now that if Iga Swiatek is going to win a tournament, she will do it with sheer dominance. The Pole also reached the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championship, which took place shortly after the Qatar Open.
The WTA World No. 1 dropped her only disappointing performance of the year so far in the Australian Open, which was also her first tournament of 2024. She lost to Linda Noskova in only the third round to crash out of the tournament.
Maria Sakkari apologizes to fans after losing to Iga Swiatek in the Indian Wells final in straight sets
Maria Sakkari also had a great campaign in the Indian Wells this year, but unfortunately, she got outclassed by Iga Swiatek in the final. The Pole gave her no chance and the match ended in no time. After losing to the World No. 1, the Greek international apologized to the fans in the stands for not being able to put on a good fight while also praising Swiatek in her speech.
Maria Sakkari said in the post-match interview:
Sorry I couldn’t put on a better fight. It was pretty quick for you guys. Credit to Iga, you’re an amazing player. A very good person, incredible champion. You deserve the best. You and your team have created something incredible. I hope we can play a lot more finals. To face each other means we’re both doing something good. Good luck with everything. You’re amazing. Best wishes to you and your team.Maria Sakkari said
For Sakkari, reaching the final of the Indian Wells was indeed a major breakthrough because she was going through a very rough patch in her career, prior to this tournament. She got eliminated from the round of 16 of the Dubai Tennis Championship and the round of 32 of the Qatar Open.
Before that, she only managed to reach the round of 16 of the Australian Open. It was really good to see that she was able to redeem herself in the Indian Wells, and this will definitely add to her confidence moving on in the tour.
