Polish Tennis player, Iga Swiatek, who scaled up the WTA rankings to become the World No. 1 in April last year, is back in New York to defend her US Open title. The Pole spoke to the media in a press conference before her debut this year at the prestigious Grand Slam, which is set to begin on Monday.
She revealed that she is unbothered by players looking to target her in the matches. For Swiatek, keeping her head in the game is what matters.
The 22-year-old disclosed that she is not surprised that many players consider her ‘the target’. She admitted that the reason many players feel they are up against Swiatek is because they’ve lost many matches to her in the past. ” I understand their feelings. But, yeah, it doesn’t really matter for me. I want to win anyway, no matter what they say, so yeah,” she said.
With four Grand Slam titles under her belt, Swiatek is eyeing her fifth at the US Open this year. The last time she was on-court was at the Semi-finals at Cincinnati, where she lost to World No. 6 and eventual winner, Coco Gauff, over a series of three sets.
Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff to clash again?
Tennis fans are gearing up for yet another potential show-down between the World No. 1, Iga Swiatek, and 19-year-old teen sensation, Coco Gauff. The draw for the 2023 US Open Women’s singles event was revealed on Thursday. It revealed that the Pole might encounter Gauff once again in the Quarter-finals if the two hold.
Coco Gauff had earlier clashed with the World No. 1 in Cincinnati Masters, where she managed to secure her first win against Swiatek in their eight meetings. Both Swiatek and Gauff are widely popular and have huge fan bases of their own. If the two did face each other in the upcoming Grand Slam, their clash would be highly anticipated and definitely one to look out for.
