The World No. 1, Iga Swiatek, is good friends with her third-round opponent at the 2023 US Open, Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan. However, this didn’t stop the Poland’s ace from playing her best game as she came out on top of her best friend in straight-set wins.

Both Swiatek and Juvan have been close friends since their younger days. The two clashed on-court for a third-round match at the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Friday. In a clash that lasted 49 minutes, the Pole showed no mercy at the World No. 145. Swiatek emerged victorious with a score of 6-0, 6-1.

Talking to the press after her easy win over Juvan, Swiatek said, “I didn’t like the fact I was kind of winning against my best friend. I knew I had to be focused and not let myself think about that.” She further elaborated that playing the Slovenian is similar to playing a sister. The Pole admitted that though she did not have many friends, Juvan was her “best friend”.

Iga Swiatek has been in great form all year. The Pole won her only Grand Slam title in 2023 at the Rolland-Garros back in June. She beat tenth seed Karolina Muchova in a three set final to claim the title. The Pole will now be eyeing her second Grand Slam victory this year at the ongoing Tournament.

Swiatek has won against all of her opponents at the ongoing Grand Slam in straight sets. The pole beat Rebecca Peterson in the first round, dominating over the Swede with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Her second match was against Daria Saville, which the 22-year-old won, scoring 6-3, 6-4 over two sets. In her latest clash, Swiatek beat her ‘best friend’ rather easily as well.

Swiatek’s form looks as great as ever. Given that the top seed makes no unforced errors, it is quite possible for her to defend her title, winning the 2023 edition as well.
